At Home in Yellowstone |
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK Launch: Bridge Bay Marina, at the north end of the lake. A modern multilane ramp with excellent docks nearby. Nearby campsites: Camp at Bridge Bay campground, a short walk from the marina. Comments: Easy to get a slip with electricity and water that gives excellent access to the lake and to the roads leading to the special features of the park. The Lake Hotel and the Lake Lodge (our favorite) are nearby. Meals and showers are available at Fishing Bridge, a few miles distant. You must have a park permit, available from the Ranger's office at the marina, for boating. This IS wilderness -you will see very few boats on the lake. |
----- When you live on a boat, as we do now for most of the year, and the grandchildren come for a visit, it is a great opportunity for sharing a special place with family. This year some of the grandkids joined us for some time shared ... first on Lake Powell, then the Tetons, and then Yellowstone National Park (a special place where other grandkids have joined us in earlier years), and eventually, with all the kids and grandkids, at Voyageur National Park in northern Minnesota.

----- Wilderness campsites are available, with reservations, from the Park Service. We have found that most days when we want a remote campsite, some are available at the last minute due to cancellations. And that was the case again this summer, so we signed up, hopped into the vehicles, and went 'critter looking' along the park roads.

----- In the afternoon, we boarded the boat, did some cruising to lakeshore hot springs, and then headed to the campsite in late afternoon. At the site, equipped with a sturdy dock, we tied off the boat for the overnight and the family headed ashore to set up tents nearby. A marvelous evening, night and dawning shared at a special place.
